As veterinary students, we
get the unique opportunity to
help out the community in
several ways. Here are just
some of the great places &
organizations we volunteer for.
The Shelter Medicine Club is a
GREAT way to reach out to &
educate the local community &
help people and their animals.
We educated children at the
Pomona Boys & Girls Club about
the importance & benefits of
spaying & neutering (photo above).
We also helped out at several
homeless clinics, where we
provided service to animals of the
homeless in the area. We had an
amazing time at these clinics &
met so many amazing, interesting
& appreciative people - it was an
unforgettable experience to say
the least!
We also held a few TNR clinics
(Trap-Neuter-Return) to help do
our part in solving the
overpopulation crisis.
And of course, we spent many
nights helping at the IVHS low-cost
vaccine clinics where we
vaccinated hundreds of animals
ANIMAL ACRES!
We absolutely love Laurie,
Frank & Animal Acres! While we
don't make it up there as often
as we would like, we try to help
as much as we can.
Last year we brought some of
the veterinarians from our
school to Animal Acres to
provide medical care for the
animals. We hope to continue to
do this in the future.
A big thanks to Laurie & Frank,
who's compassion & dedication
to the animals is such a
tremendous inspiration to us
both. Someday, Briana & I
would like to open a farmed
animal sanctuary like Animal
Acres.

International Bird Research &
Rescue Center in San Pedro. In the
photo above I am monitoring
anesthesia on a pigeon while we
clean up a wound he had. At the
center I get the chance to work
with all kinds of marine birds, from
Brown Pelicans to Western Gulls!
Baja Animal Sanctuary in
Rosarito, Mexico
A group of us went down to
Rosarito, Mexico to help out at the
amazing Baja Animal Sanctuary, a
safe haven for hundreds of
homeless dogs & cats. We
performed physical exams & give
medications to the animals. The
animals were adorable & the staff
at the Sanctuary were some of
most amazing & caring individuals I
have ever met. They take such
great care of each & every animal
there. Thanks to Baja Animal
Sanctuary for all that you do!
Island Wildlife Natural Care Center
(Zarah): I spent my summer of 2006 as an
intern at the Island Wildlife Natural Care
Center, located on Salt Spring Island in
B.C.Canada. The center was spectacular & it
was the only one on the western coast of
Canada that specialized in the rehabilitation
of Harbor Seals.
I spent my summer caring for ll kinds of
wildlife, ranging from baby sparrows, crows &
pigeons to river otters, raccoons, beavers &
harbor seals. It was an experience of a
lifetime. I learned so much about these
animals & was responsible for their daily care.
The best feeling was to be able to see them
grow up or recover from an injury & then be
released back out into the wild. It was so
rewarding & worth all the hard work.
Salt Spring Island is beautiful & the people
are so friendly. I would love to go back
someday & visit the center & all the seal pups
:)
Releasing ducks back into the wild - what a rewarding
feeling!
Helping out at the Saint Martin's
Animal Foundation Rock & Rover
fundraiser as a Mixen Vixen!
this event raised money to care for
the dogs & cats at the rescue
center.
